Day 5 - Delicious wriggly lil' bastard

Started off my day with a visit to Caffe bene that's just at the bottom of the hill from my motel. yes. bottom. hill. had to walk down looooong flight of stairs to reach it. Order Caramel Macchiato and a brownie cheesecake to accompany me while typing the previous post. the cake was kinda dry though...

Straight after my pre-breakfast meal, i went to Busan's Jagalchi Market. Since they're famous for seafood, gotta give some of it a try right?
a tank of mini eel wriggling all over each other in the tank
this has got to be the ugliest looking fish in the whole Jagalchi
the street selling live seafood
Chilli paste stall
another part of the market. sells mostly shell-type of seafood
the motel owner told me to visit this restaurant if i'm looking for seafood. i walked 3 rounds around the market just to find this... even though he gave me a name card, i could not read korean and the only thing i can read is their telephone number. so i had to compare all the telephone numbers on their sign before finding it. the things on the menu are all sooo exp. i wonder what they mean.
the lady boss told me she has a one person set for 20,000KRW which is ~$23. you won't believe what you can get with this amount of money.
keys to my shoe locker. no shoes allowed in all traditional korean restaurant.
while waiting for the seafood feast
starters, one grill prawn, seasoned turnip?, sesame mayo salad, spicy squid salad, pumpkin puree, crab leg salad, kimchi pancake, some shellfish (like gonggong) and hot seaweed soup.
this gonggong-like thing is super sweet.. i think i can hear the ocean crying
my main dish. grilled fish. it's either this or fish sashimi but i don't like sashimi so i ordered this.
i thought that was all when she gave me a pair of sushi. surprisingly, the fish sashimi on the sushi is nothing like any sashimi that i've eaten before. the fish is crunchy and not at all squishy-squashy-kind. doubt i can order another serving of this because it's a set meal
i thought the sushi was the last dish but this came. hotplate mixed-shellfish. i think there is about 3 types in it
OMG. STILL GOT! a huge bowl of soup which i can fit my head in it. fish bone soup with tofu, udon and veggies... only drank one small bowl of this
and she think it's dessert? she still gave me rice, black beans and kimchi...
cant believe i manage to stuff all these into my stomach... (except for the soup)
the lady boss took a polaroid of me and gave it to me as a present lol. i feel like a star. she also asked me to write on a piece of paper so she can stick on her wall of foreigners lol.
keep seeing this tanks of live crabs... i feel like saving them from squeezing with all the others in the tank by ordering one... but i am just toooooooo full from my seafood breakfast
looks like a departmental store? no. it's busan's famous wet market also selling seafood. i have no idea why there is so many different venues selling the same things.
what it looks like inside. i just HAD to try the live octopus because i am not coming back here again tomorrow... even though i am damn full... i ordered a live octopus ($6) and a live abalone ($12). i think he asked me how i wanted them so i played charade with him. in the end he understands me haha. i wanted sashimi tako and bbq abalone :D
he passed the moving creatures into a plastic bag an handed to an auntie. she led me upstairs and i was surprised to see this picture. i thought it is also a market upstairs.
that plate of octopus looks uber raw and fresh right? look at the video below to see how fresh it still is...
OMG can? chop it up into 728348387441985874 pieces liao still move till that??? i use my chopstick poke one then they all started to dance like they shuffling to party rock anthem wth... it's quite hard to get one piece off the plate because their suction pads are all reluctant to leave the plate...
the first bite required a HUGE amount of courage lol. after dipping into sesame oil and soya sauce, the moment i put it inside my mouth, i chew like mad so i wun feel it moving inside my mouth haha. after awhile, i took a small piece and tried letting it dance in my mouth for awhile. the feeling is quite disturbing... the suctions are like french-kissing my taste buds individually... yucks. chew like mad again. haha. but it taste pretty damn good! although it might look mushy and all, it's very chewy and almost like cooked-squid, just juicier
would i try it ever again? definitely YES!
the abalone was a letdown though... despite being alive (i saw the boss plucking it out from the side of the tank), it was pretty tasteless. it lacks the taste of the ocean. the slightly salty but freshly-sweet kind of flavour...
the last piece of octopus which i contemplated for a very long time (i swear it was moving at some point of time). i thought it was the eye and i was frantically trying to recall if i ate the other eye... i asked the lady boss and she said it's the mouth of the octopus. then she stared at me waiting for me to put it into my mouth. slowly, i put it into my mouth and chewed slowly because it's not moving anymore. one the third chew or so, i felt something crunchy and it sent all the hair on my body standing..
at least i finished this exciting breakfast's "dessert" lol
lady boss. the photo doesnt do her any justice. she just keeps closing her eyes. not because she has small eyes lol. 3rd shot and this is the one with her eyes at least not shut haha
after leaving the seafood market, i went to the place where there are tonnes of street food and where the busan film festival is hosted everytime.
first stall got me captivated. i have no idea why but whenever i see street food, it's like an empty room in my stomach opens
it's fried chicken tossed in spicy sauce. not as nice as i had imagine. but decent enough because i had it on a 98% full stomach
looks too nice to ignore :D didnt buy it though. i'm sure to make a mess of myself trying to eat that apple.
saw a queue forming so i joined it lol. it's some mochi thing with red bean and cinnamon filling like the one i had in myeong dong but this time, she cuts it open and fill it with cinnamon sugar and sunflower seeds. there are at least 10 stalls like this on this street. seems like a popular snack in busan. 10% of the people on the street are holding one of these. after buying, i saw another similiar stall but there like 20 people queueing for it. immediately regretted buying mine. sigh*
looks like parrot food eh? there's flowing sweet red bean sauce in it so it's not as dry as it looks
Busan's walk of fame? looked at some of the handprints and i couldn't recognize any of the names. must be some indie directors for some indie films hahs
seriously. where does all the space in my stomach come from? i think there's a little black hole forming in it... just couldn't resist a warm place selling ice cream
oh my, sweet cream ice cream with crunchy chocolate bar
i think it might be the weather. i'd been eating non-stop from 12-4pm. but the whiff of the waffle's scent just hit my weakspot
wanted to have oden but i really cannot take it anymore... the tteokpokki in busan seems much spicier than those in seoul. the colour is much redder and the texture is much thicker.
Daegaksa Temple. thought it was an important place because it was on the map. but it seems closed so i just snapped a picture and left
away from the street food "market", i went to the Bupyeong Market (Kkangtong Market) which is the local market according to the motel owner who told me i should visit it if i'm free. he's right. the only people in this market are older people and the things they sell are all ingredients for a fashion disaster.
saw people crowding around a food stall and took a look. red bean soup. the musky-sweet cinnamon smell made me get one bowl for myself :D it's topped with cinnamon sugar and mochi.
the auntie tried to refill my bowl but i acted to her that i am too full. it costs 3,000 won (~$3.50) and it's free flow of red bean soup i think. i see other people refilling it and sharing a bowl and still pay only 3,000 won. after i'm done, she offered me a cup of cold sweet roasted rice soup? i think that's what it is lol
again... walked past this stall and she just had to sizzle a piece in front of me when i walk pass. bought one and regretted it. not nice at all lol. good thing i had her to take-away. i would be bad if i could not finish it in front of her.
assorted kimchi(s)
yong tau foo stall? haha. selling all the ingredients you can throw into a hot pot of oden or tteokpokki :))
even more seasoned veggies and seafood
佳节礼品? i have no idea what it is. but i think its all mochi and sweets
right now, typing in another outlet of Caffe bene. i've had a lot of nice coffee here in korea but this right here is the best i've had so far.
back to seoul tmr! hope the weather there is turning better. i am going to stay in a traditional korean house next!! byebye love motel, hello 'hanok'~ it's located at an area full of traditional houses that are preserved by the govt. hope i can find it lol
~auf wiedersehen~

Day 4 continued

Was still full and cold so i walked to Lotte Departmental Store and the first thing i saw when i stepped into the mall, a guy wearing suit and bowtie selling banana. talk about being overdressed haha. one bunch sell $6 lol. i guess banana is kinda a luxury item during the winter?
SO WANTED to have a krispy kreme but i'm just too damn full.. i keep eating 2 pax's serving in korea...i think i'm going to gain more weight that expected for this trip...
after strolling through the whole of Lotte departmental store, i went back to the streets and saw a performance that was ending. i don't understand a word the mc was saying but i know he's asking everyone to count down with him. 5!! 4!!! 3!!! 2!!! 1!!!
it's snowing!!! haha no la, the countdown was for them to activate the foam machine lol. he shouted merry christmas dunno for what lol. it's still 2 weeks away and he's so excited
back to my love motel lol. my king size bed with decorated ceiling haha. i guess people who come here mostly look at the ceiling haha
huuuuge tv too compared to the normal sized computer. watched tv for 2 hours not knowing what they are saying at all lol. saw running man and some music videos
there's a jacuzzi and steam bath in my room! jacuzzi big enough for 3. had a soak and listened to music like a boss. then used the steam bath and steamed away my fatigue for the day *ahh~
today, i'm heading for the fish market and have myself some fresh sashimi! even though not a favourite of it, i should try a bit. i saw cheap tako selling in the supermarket in seoul so i guess it's going to be even cheaper in busan. i wanna eat the hugeass prawn also lol.
再见for now :D
